Maiya Stewart died at the age of 24 from an aortic aneurysm caused by Marfan syndrome. She had been diagnosed with Marfan syndrome as a baby after her father discovered in his 30s that he carried the gene. As a result, Maiya was monitored throughout her life with regular medical appointments, particularly focusing on her heart and aorta. Maiya completed her law degree while managing her health, always showing determination and resilience.

At around 22 years old, Maiya was informed that she would need elective open-heart surgery in the future to replace her aorta due to its enlargement. An operation date was eventually scheduled. Approximately one week before she passed away, Maiya called an ambulance after experiencing symptoms consistent with an aortic dissection. She was assessed but no clear signs of dissection were identified at that time, and she returned home. Maiya believed she could rest at home while waiting for her planned surgery. Just two days before her scheduled operation, Maiya died at home from an aortic dissection.

Maiya was vibrant, driven and deeply caring. She was extremely social, with a strong love for music and art, and she especially loved going to see live bands. She was incredibly talented at drawing.  She later opened her own pet sitting and dog walking business which she treasured deeply. She was passionate about helping others and cared deeply for her family, friends and community. Her loss is felt not only by those closest to her, but by everyone whose lives she touched.

Maiya's friend will be completing a sky dive in her memory, with proceeds going to our Trust. If you would like to contribute, please click on the green button below.
