Navigating the small print of the updated DVLA requirements for Marfan and Loeys-Dietz syndromes? We’ve unravelled the complexities and untangled the guidance to remove the ambiguity. Now we’re here to put you on the straight and narrow!
We were recently contacted by members who were confused by the DVLA requirements for Marfan syndrome. We have spoken to colleagues within the DVLA medical team, who have helpfully clarified the position and updated the website. Please note the following:
· • If you hold a car or motorbike licence (Group 1), you do not need to tell the DVLA that you have Marfan syndrome unless you have an aortic aneurysm. If you do have an aortic aneurysm, you must notify the DVLA. The permitted aortic diameter depends on whether you have additional risk factors. https://www.gov.uk/marfan-syndrome-and-driving
· If you have a Group 2 licence for driving buses, coaches or lorries you MUST tell the DVLA that you have Marfan syndrome via the VOCH1 form which can be downloaded here.
Please note: if you have an aortic aneurysm or you have had aortic surgery it is important to discuss your fitness to drive with your Cardiologist or Cardiothoracic Surgeon. They will advise you based on your specific circumstances and will complete additional information for the DVLA if necessary. Please do not drive if your doctor advises you that it is not safe to do so.
"The significance of aortic measurements depends on lots of factors including, your diagnosis, your size, your family history and your specific genetic change so it is impossible to give absolute measurements. This is why discussion with your doctor is vital so they can give personalised advice based on all of the above."
At present, the DVLA do not have a separate advice page for Loeys Dietz syndrome but the same advice should be followed if you have a diagnosis of LDS.
