As we stand on the cusp of the summer solstice, we find ourselves in the grip of the year's first heatwave. Heat and health are strongly linked and here are some handy tips on how to stay well and cool as the temperatures climb.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to prevent dehydration.

Monitor for Symptoms: Be aware of signs of heat-related illness and seek medical attention if needed.

Keep cool (fans and air-conditioning). For those on blood-thinners such as Warfarin and Apixaban, do INR levels more frequently at home and adjust levels in consultation with doctor or nurse.

Monitor blood pressure more frequently and keep systolic blood pressure above 100mm.

Consult with Healthcare Professional: If you are on warfarin or other anticoagulants, discuss potential INR fluctuations with your doctor and follow their specific recommendations.

Store Warfarin & Apixaban Properly: Ensure they are stored at room temperature as recommended, according to Wiley.

Avoid Strenuous Activity: Limit physical exertion during the hottest parts of the day.

Keep your living space cool: Close windows during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down. Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees. Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep.
