Getting to the heart of the matter, PEARS pioneer Tal Golesworthy will be discussing his invention in this illuminating hour-long webinar. PEARS (personalised aortic root support) is a new approach to the surgical management of the dilated aorta and arose from Tal’s own need for the device when his aorta was expanding dangerously in the early 2000s. The first patient to be implanted with his invention, Tal can happily report that over 600 patients have subsequently and successfully benefited from his ExoVasc Aortic Root Support.

Tal Golesworthy Biography

“I am a chartered engineer—with a background in research and development in coal combustion and because I have Marfan syndrome, and I was not satisfied with an aortic root replacement, I started the PEARS (Personalized External Aortic Root Support) Project. I am now the Technical Director of eXstent, where we manufacture bespoke implants, known as the ExoVasc external aortic root support, which supports dilated aortas. The implants are currently in use in 17 surgical centers around the world; I was the first patient to be fitted with the ExoVasc device 18 years ago, and I am still going strong!”

An extract from Tal's eXstent website:

"The ExoVasc® Personalised External Aortic Root Support is a revolutionary new device. It is designed to manage aortic dilation in people with Marfan syndrome and related genetic conditions.

The ExoVasc® is placed around the ascending aorta where it provides support to the patient’s own aorta and aortic valve and is designed to prevent enlargement and rupture.

This innovation developed by Exstent Limited sets a new standard in the surgical management of the dilated aorta. More than 500 patients have now received their ExoVasc® support and its effectiveness is proven by a total of over 1,400 patient-years’ experience gained during the past 17 years."
